WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization is asking residents to help shape a regional plan aimed at reducing deadly and serious traffic crashes, with public feedback now open through February 2026.
The effort is part of WMPO’s Safe Streets and Roads for All Safety Action Plan, a federally funded initiative from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The program is focused on improving safety for drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders and people using mobility devices.

WMPO is currently in the second round of community engagement, seeking feedback on draft locations for safety projects across the region. The organization held the first round of public feedback in the summer of 2025. The final plan will use public input alongside crash data to identify where investments are most urgently needed.
While final locations for improvements have not yet been selected, the SS4A plan is designed to support a range of safety upgrades, including:
- Safer crosswalks and pedestrian crossings
- Protected bike lanes and better bicycle connections
- Traffic-calming measures such as curb extensions, speed management and safer intersections
- Transit access improvements
- Better lighting, signage and visibility in high-crash areas
Residents can review draft projects and submit input through a survey and interactive project map online.
WMPO is also holding six public events where residents can learn about the plan and provide feedback in-person:
- MLK Fun Day — Jan. 17, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., MLK Community Center
- Line Dancing — Jan. 26, 6 to 8 p.m., Navassa Community Center
- Hot Chocolate Hike — Jan. 31, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Abbey Nature Preserve
