Emergency responders attempted life-saving measures before Smith was transported to Novant Health New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where he later died from his injuries.
Detectives worked the case throughout the weekend and, after consulting with the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office, charged Charles Lane, 21, with involuntary manslaughter.
During Lane’s first appearance on Jan. 14, Judge Richard Kern established a $50,000 secured bond, officially authorizing his release. He is scheduled for his next court appearance on Jan. 29 at 9 a.m. in Courtroom 302.
