Merlin Dale Osgood Jr. (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — Merlin Dale Osgood, Jr., born on May 30, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully in Wilmington, North Carolina on February 11, 2026, at the age of 68. A man of myriad talents and boundless curiosity, Merlin’s life was marked by his dedication to family, work, and an array of passions that brought him joy.

Merlin grew up in South Holland, Illinois, where he graduated from Thorn Ridge High School. Following his education, he answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army from 1974 to 1977. His service exemplified his commitment to duty and honor, values he carried throughout his life.

A natural leader and craftsman, Merlin spent his career in the industrial field as a foreman, showcasing his skills as a jack-of-all-trades with expertise in welding and fabricating work. His professional life was distinguished by his strong work ethic and ability to turn challenges into opportunities.

Merlin’s interests were as diverse as they were engaging. An avid player of pickleball, he also enjoyed the tranquility of kayaking and fishing. An enthusiast of the natural world, Merlin tended his gardens with care and was both a bird watcher and a certified frog watcher. He found joy in reading and spent countless hours playing WORDLE puzzles, always eager to learn and explore.

He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin D. Osgood, his beloved wife, DeAnn Osgood, and his sister, Renee Gage. Merlin is survived by his loving mother, Danute Vitagliano; his devoted children, Ashley Moses and her husband Chad, and Merlin D. Osgood III and his wife Brittany; and his dear sister, Vikki Ruffolo. His legacy lives on in his cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Rebecca, Riley, Lina, and Teddy; and his special niece, Nicole Osgood Spencer and her husband David and their children, Jordan, Taylor and Janiyah. Merlin is also mourned by many other loving family members and friends.

In the words of Hunter S. Thompson, “There he goes. One of God’s own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.” This quote, chosen by his family, perfectly encapsulates the unique and remarkable spirit of Merlin.

Private family services are being planned to honor Merlin’s memory.

In lieu of flowers, donations are encouraged to the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher, where Merlin’s love for nature and learning could be shared with others through their frog watcher program.

Merlin Dale Osgood, Jr. will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his enduring love, indomitable spirit, and the joy he brought to all who knew him.
