PLEASURE ISLAND — A locally owned sandwich shop is donating tens of thousands of dollars to help bring a volleyball court to life on Cape Fear Boulevard.
Jersey Mike’s of Carolina Beach is giving $22,600 to build a second sand court on the boulevard, planned next to the existing Pleasure Island Youth Volleyball (PIVB) court on a town-owned lot.
Jersey Mike’s owner Jason Kesler worked with Carolina Beach town council, town staff, Pleasure Island Volleyball League and the Friends of the Parks and Greenways for approval, design finalization, and construction. The court is expected to be finished within two weeks.

The court came to life after a local bar decided to remove its sand courts. The volleyball league — open to girls, though a boys’ league is in the works — spent years trying to find a new home before the town offered up a space on Cape Fear Boulevard. The land was going to be reverted to a parking lot.
“Its such a fun island vibe,” Kesler said in a release, praising the community involvement bringing the new sand court to life. “You have music playing, dogs chilling, everyone rolling up on bikes and golf carts — it’s so fun for the locals. We just want more kids to be part of it.”
