WILMINGTON — Alvira Virginia Franchino, known to many as Vera, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, at the age of 97.
A woman of great warmth, resilience, and kindness, she was born in Paterson, New Jersey, on August 31, 1928, and lived a remarkable life defined by hard work, generosity, and deep devotion to family and community.
Alvira dedicated many years to her career at Kodak as a film processor, where her meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic were hallmarks of her character.
Notably, she continued working well into her later years, remaining professionally active until the age of 85—a testament to her independence, determination, and love of purpose. She also found great fulfillment in transcribing materials into braille for the visually impaired, providing the gift of literature and knowledge to others and reflecting her lifelong commitment to service.
A loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Alvira found her greatest joy in her family, cherishing every opportunity to share her wisdom, warmth, and affection. She remained socially active throughout her life, enjoying games of Mahjong and participating enthusiastically in senior center activities, where she formed lasting friendships and stayed engaged with those around her. Her kind heart and spirited presence touched all who knew her.
Alvira was preceded in death by her parents, Emilio and Philomena Nutile Tirri; her beloved husband of fifty-five years, Philip Franchino, a World War II veteran; her stepson, Philip Franchino; her daughter, Ann Marie Franchino; and her four sisters. She leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and compassion.
