BRUNSWICK COUNTY — An ambulance caught fire inside the bay of a government building over the weekend. No injuries were reported and physical damage to the garage was contained to the immediate area of the bay.
Firefighters responded at 11:28 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 17, to Building C at the Brunswick County Government Center in Bolivia. According to the county, the cause of the fire is still being investigated, though the garage was engulfed in smoke as a parked ambulance in the rear was on fire.
Crews successfully extinguished it before the flames could spread to other parts of the building. Building C is considered structurally sound, according to the county, and only one ambulance was totaled; the ambulance that sustained damage was not one of the newest that came into the EMS fleet last fall. Brunswick County spent $2.6 million in 2024 to bring in seven new ambulances.
The county said the damage will not affect quick emergency medical services, as it maintains a robust fleet with multiple ambulance stations placed countywide.
“Brunswick County is grateful to the Bolivia Volunteer Fire Department and mutual aid support from Fire Stations 4, 6, 13, 18, 37, as well as our EMS and law enforcement responders, for their quick and diligent work in responding to this emergency,” according to a county release.
This week staff and a restoration contractor will be on site for cleanup and to conduct inspections for repairs.
