WILMINGTON — Three pedestrians were injured Thursday evening after a man drove onto the sidewalk near the Wilmington Convention Center. The incident happened as a Dwight Yoakam concert at nearby Live Oak Pavilion let out.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m., according to the Wilmington Police Department. The traffic units responded and noted the incident involved an impaired driver.

Chapel Hill resident and 44-year-old Thomas Clay Robinson Jr. was traveling north on Nutt Street and failed to maintain lane control. Upon driving onto the sidewalk, he struck a pole, three pedestrians, and a tree.

One of the pedestrians was transported to Novant Health NHRMC with serious injuries.

WPD charged Robinson with felony serious injury by vehicle, driving while impaired, reckless driving wanton disregard, and expired registration. He is being held at the NHSO Detention Center under a $75,000 secured bond.
