Here’s what you need to know about the 2018 elections (that started today)

WILMINGTON — It has only been four months since the last election, but it is once again the start of an election season in Southeastern N.C. as the filing period for candidates begins today. This year’s elections will cover local, state, and federal government.

There are several high-profile elections taking place this year in Southeastern N.C. including District Attorney, US Congress, several state senators, and Sheriffs in New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick County. The race for Pender County Sheriff has already attracted several candidates who made announcements with intentions to run in advance.

For those interested in filing for office for U.S. House, N.C. Senate, District Attorney and most other offices the filing period begins Feb. 12 and ends Feb. 28. Superior and district court officers open June 18, and soil and water conservation district supervisor opens June 11.

Election dates

For 2018, the primary election the voter registration deadline ends April 18, One-Stop voting for the primary election begins April 19 and ends May 5; election day for the Primary election is May 8.

The 2018 general election will take place on Nov 6, voter registration deadline is Oct 12, and One-Stop voting begins Oct 18 and ends Nov 3.

According to the North Carolina Board of Elections, “One-stop absentee voting (commonly known as ‘early voting’) allows any registered voter to cast an absentee ballot in person on select days prior to Election Day. One-stop voting begins on the third Thursday prior to Election Day and ends on the last Saturday before Election Day. Unlike on Election Day, when registered voters can only vote at their specific precinct, one-stop voting allows registered voters to vote at any one-stop absentee voting site in the county. One-stop sites will have all the ballot styles for a given election at each site.”
