WPD responds to multiple shootings, including man who shot off his own pinky

A recent argument with a neighbor had been simmering for a while. Apparently, when it boiled over, the shooter managed to shoot off his own pinky.

WILMINGTON — Police officers responded to three separate shootings this weekend, including an intoxicated man who shot off his own pinky finger.

The first incident occurred on the 140 block Edgewater Lane. Early in the morning of Sunday, Feb. 11, Garret Grinnell, 21, shot himself in the hand, severing his pinky finger. According to the Wilmington Police Department, Grinnell was still upset about a “heated argument” with his neighbor he’d had several weeks earlier.

According to Grinnell, he had consumed pills and smoked marijuana, and – while intoxicated – fired several rounds at his neighbor’s house and truck. The neighbor called later in the morning to report bullet holes in his property; at this point, Grinnell had already been taken to the hospital.

Grinnell was arrested without incident.

Two other shootings occurred, both in the greater downtown Wilmington area.

According to the Wilmington Police Department, ShotSpotter recorded several shots fired near the 1200 block of South 12th Street around 2:45 p.m. on Sunday. Officers investigated and found several occupied residences had been struck by bullets. None of the residents interviewed by officers reported seeing anything.

Several hours later, around 8 p.m., officers responded to the 200 block of Gores Row after ShotSpotter recorded several more gunshots. A vehicle was found several bullet holes but, again, residents said they hadn’t seen anything.

It is not known if the two incidents were related. Police are still investigating, and ask anyone with information is asked to contact WPD at 910-343-3600 or use Text A Tip.
