Part of the national Honor Flight Network, the local chapter was founded in 2020 to ferry veterans to the nation’s capital for an all-expenses paid trip for a day of remembrance and honor. Three flights have taken place to date, with next year’s scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
Eighty-five veterans will be chosen from a pool of applicants who have served prior to 1975. Any veteran facing a life-limiting illness can also apply, regardless of which years were served in the military.
“Participants in Honor Flight consistently tell us that the trip is a life-changing experience,” Ruth Ravitz Smith, founder and president of the local chapter, said.
Applications are open here beginning Nov. 18. Applicants who are not selected for the 2025 flight will be placed on a waiting list for future expeditions.
Specific criteria for veterans and the guardians who serve as their one-on-one escorts or “battle buddies” for the day can also be found on the chapter’s website.
The community is welcome to the airport to welcome back the veterans during their Saturday, April 26, 2025 flight.
