WILMINGTON — Johnny Mac Hughes, affectionately known as “Johnny Dollar,” cashed in his final check on May 23, 2026, just four days shy of his 80th birthday. Born on May 27, 1946, in Wilmington, NC, he stayed true to his roots and departed this world from the same city that first welcomed him.
Johnny was a man of many talents and interests. His early years were spent serving his country as a medic in the Air Force, a role he filled with dedication and pride. Later, he applied his skills closer to home, working as an Industrial Maintenance Mechanic for W.R. Grace/Acadia until his well-deserved retirement.
A jack-of-all-trades, Johnny was never one to sit still. When he wasn’t fishing for his next big catch, you could find him creating stunning works of stained glass, all while cheering on his beloved UNC Tar Heels. Whether on land or water, he navigated life with a twinkle in his eye and a grin that suggested he knew more than he was letting on.
Preceded in death by his cherished wife of 29 years, Bonnie Harker Hughes, and his parents, Lenvil Hughes and Celia Gertrude Robinson Hughes.
Johnny is survived by a loving family who will carry on his legacy of wit and wisdom. His sons Trevor (and wife Amanda) and Allan (and wife Jamie) will undoubtedly keep the stories alive, while brother Billy (and wife Patricia) and sister Patsy H. King fondly remember every shared adventure. Johnny also leaves behind three grandchildren—Garrett, Bryce, and Alex—who will forever carry the spark of his spirit.
Johnny’s infectious humor and undeniable charm have left a lasting impression; he’s probably already regaling the angels with tales of his UNC Tar Heels’ greatest hits. Rest easy, Johnny—you’ve earned it.
