WILMINGTON — Debra Lynn Cherney, born on July 6, 1952, in Newark, New Jersey, passed away on May 15, 2026, in Wilmington, North Carolina, at the age of 73.
Debra was a devoted wife, mother, and friend whose warmth and kindness touched many lives. She spent much of her career as a Meter Reader for the Water Department, where she was recognized as the first Meter Reader in Monmouth County, New Jersey. Her dedication to her work reflected her commitment to her community and her pioneering spirit.
Outside of her professional life, Debra had a passion for cooking. Her kitchen was always filled with the aroma of her culinary creations, bringing joy to family and friends alike. She also cherished her time spent sewing and engaging in other arts and crafts, allowing her creativity to shine through in every piece she made. Her love for the beach was well known, often finding peace and tranquility by the ocean’s edge.
Preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Carol Spavin Medenbach, Debra leaves behind a loving family who will cherish her memory. She is survived by her devoted husband, William “Bill” Cherney; her four sons, William Cherney and his wife, Sadie, of Greenville, South Carolina, Brad Cherney of Wilmington, North Carolina, Blake Cherney and his wife, Emma, of Atlanta, Georgia, and Robert Thompson and his wife, Christine, of Kennesaw, Georgia.
In accordance with Debra’s wishes, no formal services will be held. Her family respects her desire for simplicity and privacy in her final farewell.
Debra’s memory will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her. Her legacy of love, warmth, and creativity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to have been part of her life.
