Richard Dean Medlin, 64

WILMINGTON — Richard Dean Medlin, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2026, in Wilmington, NC, at the age of 64. Born on June 14, 1961, in Gaston County, NC, Richard was known for his kind heart, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to his family and work.

Richard graduated from Hoggard High School, where he laid the foundation for a life characterized by hard work and integrity. He was baptized at Long Leaf Baptist, a testament to his faith and values that guided him throughout his life. Richard dedicated many years of service to the US Postal Service before retiring, leaving behind a legacy of diligence and commitment.

In his leisure time, Richard enjoyed playing tennis, going to the movies, and traveling, especially his trips to California to visit family.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Medlin Ray and Otis Medlin, Sr.; his stepfather, L.R. Ray; and his sisters, Carol Rogers, Louise Sanchez, Betty Sue Bolding, and Jo Ann Medlin. He is survived by his brothers, Otis Medlin, Jr. (Sharon) and Stanley T. Medlin (Catherine); his sister, Jane Gay; numerous nieces and nephews who held a special place in his heart; and a dear family friend, Linda Howard.

The family will hold a private time to honor Richard’s memory. They extend their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors and staff of the Step-Down Unit at Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center for their compassionate care during his final days.

Richard is now reunited with his mother and those who have gone before him. Though he was a private person, his love and dedication to his family were unwavering, and he was cherished by all who knew him. He was a hardworking and dedicated man who never had a mean bone in his body. His gentle presence will be deeply missed.
