WILMINGTON — Lennan Walter Miles, 96, of Wilmington, NC, passed away at home with his family by his side on March 6, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of service, faith, and love for his family and community.

Born on August 5, 1928, in Dillon, SC, Walter was one of five boys born to his loving parents. He dedicated much of his life to serving others, first through his service in the U.S. Army and later through his unwavering devotion to his faith and family.

Walter was a hardworking man who began working in the cotton fields at the age of 16. He enlisted in the Army on October 16, 1947, and proudly served his country for 21 years, ultimately achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. His service took him to several locations, including Fort Jackson, SC. Fort Bliss, TX, Greece, Iceland, France, Germany, and Key West, FL. He had a profound impact on all those around him, whether in the military, church, or his local community.

After retiring from the Army in 1979, he moved from Texas to Wilmington and embraced his new life, showcasing his dedication to both his work and family. He served as a security guard at General Electric (GE) from 1980 to 2008. Walter was well-known for his deep love and commitment to his family. Throughout his lifetime, he made an incredible impact by fostering 5 children.

A dedicated member of the Church of God, Walter spent 34 years teaching Sunday School, where he inspired countless lives with his wisdom and compassion. He also served as a council member of the Brookfield Church of God. His faith was of paramount importance to him, and it was in 1977, after a life-changing dream, that he gave his heart to Christ and was saved. He often reflected on the sermon that led him to that moment, with its stark message of salvation.

Walter leaves behind six daughters: Betty Afton of Wilmington, Anneliese Warren (Mike Warren) of Colorado, Charlotte Castle of Texas, Christine Jacobs of Leland, Mary Webb (Marvin Webb) of Lake Waccamaw, and Georgia Jacobs (Tony Jacobs) of Wilmington. He was a proud grandfather to 17 grandchildren, great-grandfather to 38 great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandfather to 47 great-great-grandchildren.

Walter was preceded in death by both of his parents, his father George E. Miles, mother Amanda Cook, four brothers Willie Miles, Johnnie Miles, Jeston Miles, Wycliffe Miles, wives Louise Miles and Pauline Glover Miles, and son James C. Miles. His memory will be cherished by his family, friends, and all who knew him.

Walter’s faith, strength, and love will continue to inspire and guide all who knew him. He leaves behind a powerful example of service, devotion, and love. May he rest in peace.

Visitation for his family and friends will be held 6 to 8 pm Tuesday, March 11, 2025 at Brookfield Church of God 131 Elliott Dr., Wilmington, NC 28405

Funeral services are planned for 11 am Wednesday, March 12, 2025 at Brookfield Church of God. Burial will be at the Lewis Family Cemetery in Bladenboro, NC.
