WILMINGTON — On Saturday, Oct. 31, the Alzheimer’s Association is hosting Walk To End Alzheimer’s at UNCW’s Greene Track & Field.

Check-ins will begin at 9 a.m., the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. and the walk will follow after.

Participants begin honoring those affected by Alzheimer’s with the Promise Garden ceremony — which involves the walkers picking out certain colored flowers that represent their personal link to Alzheimer’s and walking with them.

Blue flowers represent that the participant has the disease, yellow flowers mean they are caring for someone with the disease, purple flowers convey they’ve lost someone with the disease, and orange flowers indicate their support for the Alzheimer’s Association.

More than seven million Americans live with Alzheimer’s and is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. In North Carolina alone, there are over 210,000 people living with the disease, along with 338,000 caregivers.

The Alzheimer’s Association hosts annual walks across the nation, with 17 are in North Carolina counties.

For more information on registering as a participant, team captain, sponsor, or volunteer, click here or call (800) 272-3900.

Registration is free for participants although donations are encouraged when signing up.
