WILMINGTON — It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Lewis Kenneth “Ken” Long, a devoted professional, beloved family member, and proud Duke fan. Ken was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Lewis Johnson Long and Marie Madalene Stanley Long. His roots ran deep in East Texas, where his extended family continues to reside. “Texan” was a connection he proudly carried throughout his life.
In 1959, Ken and his family moved to Dunn, NC, where he graduated from Dunn High School in 1968. He attended Appalachian State University on a football scholarship, excelling as an All-State Defensive End. Ken completed his Certification at Fayetteville Technical Institute in HVAC, which became the foundation of his lifelong career.
In 1975, he moved to Wilmington, NC, focusing on commercial HVAC work. Over the years, he became an icon in the industry, known for his experience, extensive knowledge, and love for the challenge that each new project brought. He was one of the founding members of HVAC StarPlus, and mentored many technicians throughout the years. He left a lasting impact on countless colleagues and customers.
Outside of his work, Ken found joy in tending his yard, nurturing his roses, and managing the annual pecan crop from his old-growth trees. He was known for his bright, quick mind and sharp sense of humor
Ken was pre-deceased by his parents, and he leaves behind a family who loved him dearly: his sister, Edna, and her husband, Jim Nelson; his cherished niece, Janet Marie Gerhard, and her husband, Jacob. He is also survived by his daughter, Kendall Marie Cobb and her husband, Chris; and two grandchildren, Corbett and Mary Vivian.
A service of remembrance is planned for a later date. His ashes will be interred in Center, Texas, next to his mama, a place that held great significance for him.
