Edith Rooks Moore, 103

Edith Rooks Moore (Quinn McGowen Funeral Home)

ROCKY POINT — A kind and feisty soul, a gracious and loving lady, Edith Gray Rooks Moore, entered eternal rest on May 31, 2024 at the age of 103. She was born May 9, 1921 one of eleven children born to Arthur Wright Rooks and Estelle Rooks, living all of her wonderful life in the small community of Rocky Point.

In addition to her parents Gray was preceded in death by her husband, Lepton Monroe Moore; son; David Monroe Moore, grandson, David Moore; daughter-in-law, Linda Moore; sisters, Margaret Ennis, Udell Langston, Velma Anderson, Maeola Moore, and Hilda Tompkins; and brothers, Norman, Lorace, Sheldon, and Lloyd Rooks.

Gray is survived by her children, Douglas Moore, Allen Moore (Judy), and Edith Anne Shannon (Jerry); grandchildren, Melissa Padgett (Joey), Kristy Moore, Ray Moore (Belinda), Kevin Moore (Lynn), Kim Johnson, Ana Parker (Josh), Kyle Shannon (Nicole), and Angie Godwin (Adam); fifteen great grandchildren; ten great great grandchildren; sister, Mary Elizabeth Douglas; and many special nieces, nephews, and friends.

Gray was a lifelong faithful member of Riley’s Creek Baptist Church where she held the distinction of being the oldest member.

Faith, family, independent, spirited, and hard worker are the words that come to mind when thinking of Gray. To her, age was just a number, and nothing could stand in her way. When Lepton died at the age of 38 Gray’s work ethic stepped in and she did excellent caring for herself and her children. Gray was an outstanding cook, homemaker, gardener, and quilter. There was very little that Gray could not do. In her later years, Gray was a caregiver to many folks, some younger than she was. Gray’s strong Christian faith was her guide all through her life. Gray’s sweet smile will surely be missed.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 at Riley’s Creek Baptist Church. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary with Pastor EC Mattocks conducting the service.

Burial will follow in Eakins Cemetery beside her beloved Lepton.
