WILMINGTON — Detlev Lienau ‘Lank’ Lancaster, 88, died peacefully at home on June 8, 2026, in Wilmington, NC.
Lank was born in Wake Country, NC, in February of 1938 to Luke Wilson Lancaster and Jessie Anna Lienau. Lank, his parents, and his sister, Rella Jean, lived briefly in Charleston, SC, before returning to North Carolina and the family tobacco farm in Fuquay-Varina where Lank learned the values of family, hard work, and a drive to excel to the highest level. When he was 13 years old, he was recruited by Porter Military Academy in Charleston, SC, where he spent his 8th, 9th, and 10th grade years. Returning to Raleigh, NC, Lank finished out his high school years at Needham Broughton HS, graduating in 1956. He won a full four year Naval ROTC scholarship to UVA. In 1957, after his freshman year, Lank left school to enlist in the United States Army, and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division at Ft. Bragg in Fayetteville, NC. His three years in the Army also took him to Germany.
In 1960, Lank joined his family, who had moved to the coast, and began his studies at Wilmington College, now the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. It was there that he met Eugenie Leah Goodman, and they married on June 16, 1963. Lank took Genie to Los Angeles, CA, where he discovered a love of surfing. A year later, they returned to North Carolina, where Lank joined the Carolina Beach Lifeguard team as head lifeguard and opened East Coast Surfboards with good friend Harold Petty. East Coast Surfboards became one of the first local surf shops to design and shape its own surfboards rather than import them from the West Coast.
In 1967, Lank entered the United States Air Force, and attended the USAF Officer Training School in San Antonio, TX. Lank had a distinguished 22 year Air Force career and retired as a Lt. Col. in 1986. The USAF took him to Hampton, VA, Southeast Asia, Anchorage, AK, and Oahu, HI. In 1975 he moved his family to the Washington DC area, settling in suburban Maryland, where he spent the rest of his military career. Lank followed his time in the military working for SAIC until 2000, when he consented to finally retire. In 1990, he and Genie realized their goal of returning to the beach, and lived for the next 25 years at Carolina Beach, NC. During that time Lank and Genie enjoyed time boating with the Cape Fear Sail and Power Squadron and riding the roads on Lank’s Harley Davidson. In 2015 Lank and Genie built their dream home in the Village at Mott’s Landing, just up the road in Wilmington, NC. Lank spent his final days there, surrounded by his loving wife and family, and his amazing team of caregivers.
Lank was most devoted to his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 amazing years, Eugenie Leah, and their daughters, Tracey Kruger (husband Jorge, children Michael, Alicia, and Lucas) and Nicole Lancaster (children Zooey, Natassja, and Phoebe). He is deeply loved, and will be missed by a huge community of family, friends, and caregivers who will remember him for his charisma, generosity, intelligence, humor, and his outstanding moral character.
