Sylvia Basinger Wetsig, 70, encouraging mother who was passionate about her children’s success

Sylvia Basinger Wetsig, 70, died peacefully Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2019, at Lower Cape Fear Hospice, Wilmington.

Sylvia was born Nov. 24, 1948, in Salisbury to Ruby Kluttz and Claude Basinger. She married Paul Wetsig in 1973. Sylvia worked for years in the medical field serving others and later became a certified ophthalmic technician. Later, she transitioned to the field of optometry serving as an optometric technician and retired from Doctors Vision Center in 2009.

Sylvia was a loving wife and mother and passionate about her children’s success, staying up late with her daughter quizzing her on school topics, even into college. One of her daughter’s favorite sayings from Sylvia was, “Melissa, all your dad and I want is for you to give your best. But honey, your best is an A.”

Sylvia and Paul were active members for years at Scotts Hill Baptist Church, Scotts Hill. The central theme for her and Paul’s home has always been one centered on Jesus Christ. Sylvia’s family will miss her dearly, but rejoices in the truth that they will see her again one day.

Sylvia is survived by her husband, Paul Wetsig of Wilmington; daughter, Melissa Phillippi, son-in-law, Dave Phillippi, and their children, Pela and Adelle Phillippi, of Wilmington; son, Darrin Leazer of Lexington; and brother, Sydney Basinger of Carolina Beach. She was preceded in death by her brother Vernon Basinger of North Carolina.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 2, at Andrews Mortuary, 1617 Market St., Wilmington. The family will receive guests at 1:30 p.m. prior to services. The Rev. Butch Taylor will officiate the ceremony. A graveside service will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park Cemetery, Shipyard Blvd. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Sylvia’s life.
