SURF CITY — The N.C. Department of Transportation and Town of Surf City will continue to pilot a traffic signal to address congestion near the island roundabout South Topsail and North New River drives.

The signal was installed at N.C. 50 and N.C. 210 for a two-week trial run which began on May 6. NCDOT and the Town of Surf City report having positive results.

“No crashes occurred near the island roundabout and with limited pedestrian activity, traffic moved more efficiently, improving safety for pedestrians and drivers,” according to an NCDOT release. “Vehicular backups observed were limited to peak travel times.”

The signal will continue as congestion is monitored with adjustments to signal timing as needed. Both the NCDOT and town are working toward a long-term solution.

Motorists should slow down while driving through the area.
