PENDER COUNTY — To address congestion near an island roundabout in Surf City, the N.C. Department of Transportation and town are piloting the installation of a temporary traffic signal.
It will go into effect on May 6, located when entering Surf City at the roundabout at N.C. Highway 50 at South Topsail Drive and 210 at North New River Drive. When red, the temporary signal will prompt drivers to stop and wait for a green light before proceeding to the roundabout. The goal is to give vehicles more time on the island to drive through the roundabout.

“With the busy season approaching, we understand the increased demand on the roundabout and the congestion it’s causing,” Michelle Howes, Division 3 Deputy Division Engineer, said in a release.
The project was identified in a feasibility study, according to Howes, with the goal to work toward a long-term solution. Also included will be temporary barriers that limit pedestrian crossing in the roundabout; detour routes should be followed instead.
Surf City Town Manager Kyle Breuer said the town will monitor the temporary installment’s efficiency for future decisions on how to mitigate traffic issues on the island. NCDOT and the town will analyze results of the signal for a minimum of two weeks, with the option to extend if it proves to be a positive solution.
Motorists should slow down when traveling through and follow all signage.
