BRUNSWICK COUNTY — The nuclear plant in Brunswick County operated by Duke Energy will be testing its sirens on July 1.

The 38 sirens are within 10 miles of the plant near Southport and testing will take place between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. to ensure proper functioning. The sirens will last for 5 to 30 seconds and some may require testing more than once or followup testing after maintenance could take place after 11 a.m.

The public will not have to take action and since it’s a test, local broadcast stations will not be interrupted by emergency messaging.

Testing is performed in cooperation with emergency management officials in Brunswick and New Hanover counties.
