WINNABOW — A new community liason will be part of the Cape Fear Rural Planning Organization’s Transportation Organization’s Transportation Advisory Committee (RTAC).

Winnabow Fire Chief Travis Mercer will represent the area including Town Creek. He was nominated by Brunswick County Commissioner Mike Forte in April.

Brunswick commissioner Frank Williams, who serves as RTAC chair, said in a press release the goal is to increase community engagement on needs facing Brunswick residents, particularly in unincorporated areas of the county.

“Creating these new community liaison positions is a proactive step to increase engagement and input from areas that do not have representation on the Rural Transportation Advisory Committee,” Williams added.

He noted Mercer is a good fit, particularly when it comes to providing input “from a public safety perspective.”

Mercer was recently outspoken about the Green Hill Planned Development near U.S. Highway 17 and Green Hill Road, due to flooding issues facing the area. He was concerned about the impact it could have on fire department or EMS response times, if increased traffic on already vulnerable roadway infrastructure isn’t improved upon. The developers are suing Brunswick County after the planning board denied the 1,340-home neighborhood, with Mercer’s testimony being compelling for one planning board member.

“I’m looking to serve as a Rural Transportation Advisory Committee Community Liaison to help improve transportation and infrastructure in our rural communities,” Mercer said in a press release about his new liason role. “I believe strong transportation planning is important for public safety, economic growth, and the overall quality of life for citizens.”
