PENDER COUNTY — A coordinated effort among multiple emergency management agencies extinguished a woods fire in Willard on Tuesday.

Crews responded to the fire off Morning Dove Lane around 5 p.m.; it grew to roughly 15 acres. NC Forest Service, Pender EMS and Fire, Penderlea Volunteer Fire Department, Atkinson Fire Department, Pender County Fire Marshal’s Office, and Pender County Emergency Management responded. Crews contained the flames using three forestry plows and three aircraft to help limit spread.

Firefighters wil continue to monitor and secure the fire perimeter.

According to Pender County Fire Marshal’s office, nearby residents should expect smoke and smodering conditions in the next few days.

“This incident is a strong reminder of how quickly fires can spread, especially during dry conditions,” the office released. “We urge everyone to use caution and follow all local and state regulations regarding outdoor burning.”

Its cause has yet to be released.
