LELAND — The Town of Leland is ramping up efforts to ensure emergency access to local businesses by strictly enforcing fire lane parking rules.

The Leland Police Department is now issuing civil and state citations to drivers whose vehicles are parked, stopped, or idling in designated fire lanes. Violators are subject to a $25 Leland civil citation and/or additional state citations, which would include the cost of court.
Fire lanes are critical access points for fire trucks, ambulances, and other emergency vehicles. Blocking these areas can significantly slow response times during life-safety incidents. Clear lanes ensure firefighters can position equipment, connect to hydrants, and reach all sides of a building with hose lines.
The enforcement follows several months of preparation during which town staff worked with local businesses to repaint fire lanes and update signage, making no-parking zones more visible and easier for drivers to identify.
Town leadership encourages residents to support community safety by keeping these areas clear, and asks that violations be reported directly to the Leland Police Department.
