On Saturday, May 11, at 10 a.m. the public is welcome to attend with representatives from the land trust and Mayor Steve Smith on hand. They will address questions about the project and the fundraising efforts underway.

Coastal Land Trust launched an $8 million campaign to preserve the 150-acre property in south Topsail Island, consisting of maritime shrub forests, estuarine wetlands, dunes, and 1.6 miles of shoreline frontage. Residents have referred to it as “The Point” for years and came together to create Conserve the Point to establish a public-private partnership and ensure long-term environmental regulations to prevent future development.

The land trust signed an agreement with the three families who own the Point — the McCullens, McLeods, and Oppegaards — to purchase the land by March 2025. It executed a six-figure down payment and has applied for North Carolina Land and Water Fund, North American Wetlands Conservation Act, and National Fish and Wildlife Federation grants. It’s also taking private contributions.

The meeting requires an RSVP here and will take place at the Assembly Building, 720 Channel Boulevard.
