WILMINGTON — A six-month program that trains new people to become firefighters has applications open in New Hanover County.

The Wilmington Fire Department is accepting applications for the 2025 Recruit Academy (click here for more info). Recruitment ends April 18, 2024.

The recruit position is entry-level; it also comes benefits — group health and life insurance, North Carolina local government retirement, 401K, paid holidays, paid vacation and sick leave, and tuition reimbursement.

According to Fire Chief Steve Mason: “[E]ach class brings new talents, perspectives, and experiences that will make our department stronger. Becoming a member of the WFD family is not easy. Wearing our uniform is an honor and a privilege. Those who have what it takes to earn it, will be rewarded with the best job in the world.”

Candidates who wish to apply should be at least 18 years old, have a strong work ethic, be responsible and determined, and have an appreciation for teamwork. No previous firefighting experience is required to apply.

Chosen applicants will enroll in a six-month Recruit Academy, also paid, set to begin in August this year. Upon completion, recruits are transferred to shift and work 24-hours on a rotating schedule.
