WILMINGTON — Roadwork downtown that was delayed due to Hurricane Idalia will begin next week.
South Front Street, between Queen and Castle streets, will undergo repairs starting Sept. 18. the block is identified in the City of Wilmington’s brick street rehabilitation plan and will be restored to a brick street over the course of eight to 10 weeks.
Crews will remove existing asphalt over what is a partial base layer of bricks, will fix the existing bricks and add new ones for a fully refurbished brick street.
The street will be closed during this time. Traffic control measures will be in place with advanced warning at the intersection of Front and Nun streets, as well as Front Street and Burnett Blvd. A message board will be installed at Carolina Beach Road and West Lake Shore Drive.
The city recommends drivers detour the construction by taking Surry Street; however, there are multiple ways to avoid South Front.
In 2016, city council approved a resolution establishing a brick streets policy on how to best preserve existing brick streets.
