With flooding expected, what should you do with your car? The city of Wilmington has offered up one solution: park in one of the city's downtown parking decks, now open to the public.

WILMINGTON — As the predicted storm surge and heavy rainfall approaches, many people are probably trying to figure out what to do with their vehicles.

Fortunately, the city of Wilmington has opened up its parking decks for residents to park their cars as the storm approaches.

Parking decks on Market Street, 2nd Steet and the New Hanover County Library parking deck on 2nd street opened to the public at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Malissa Talbert, spokesperson for Wilmington, said parking is available for vehicles only; that means no boats, trailers, wave runners or any other personal property.

The first level of the decks at all locations are reserved for emergency service vehicles and handicap parking. People with reserved spaces are asked to move their vehicles up to higher floors to make way for emergency service vehicles.

At some point before or during Hurricane Florence’s arrival, Wilmington will close the gates to the three decks. The gates will reopen after the storm has passed.

Talbert said Wilmington assumes no liability for damage incurred to vehicles before, during or after the incoming storm.

Check out the elevation map below, which shows what areas will be under water at approximately 13 feet above sea level. You can add in your specific locations and other flooding conditions on the interactive map here.
