SOUTHEASTERN, N.C.— With many evacuation orders in place, and more that could soon come, residents should also prepare for local bridges to begin closure protocols.
Most bridges in the tri-county — New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties — region will close at the discretion of local officials as hurricane-force winds grow stronger.
Area protocol for the area’s bridges can be found below and will be updated with closure notices when more information becomes available:
New Hanover
- Cape Fear Memorial – will close to motorists after 40 mph sustained winds.
- Heide Trask – NCDOT will chain and shut down operations after 30 mph winds.
- Snow’s Cut – will close to motorists after 45 mph sustained winds.
- Isabel Holmes – NCDOT will chain and shut down operations after 30 mph sustained winds.
- Dan Cameron – According to NCDOT spokesperson Chad Kimes, bridges will begin closing when local law enforcement deems it unsafe, with some exceptions.
Pender
- Topsail Island bridge at N.C. 210 – According to Pender County spokesperson, Tammy Proctor, NCDOT controls the bridges. According to NCDOT spokesperson Chad Kimes, bridges will begin closing when local law enforcement deems it unsafe, with some exceptions.
- Topsail Island swing bridge – NCDOT will chain and shut down operations after 30 mph sustained winds.
Brunswick
- Oak Island bridge at Country Club Drive -will close to motorists after 45 mph sustained winds.
- Oak Island bridge at Middleton Boulevard -will close to motorists after 45 mph sustained winds.
- Sunset Beach bridge – will close to motorists after 50 mph sustained winds.
- Holden Beach bridge – Port City Daily is waiting for a response.
- Ocean Isle bridge – Port City Daily is waiting for a response.
