WILMINGTON — Among those considered the world’s elite ballerinas is Wilmington’s Dara Holmes. Now with Joffrey Chicago, Holmes is returning home to the Port City for the first time in nearly a decade for a performance at the Cape Fear Community College Wilson Center.

Holmes is returning home to dance the part of Diamond in the Wilmington Ballet Company’s production of “Sleeping Beauty.”

The show is Sunday, June 11, at 4 p.m.

“Sleeping Beauty is the kickoff for Wilmington Ballet Company’s (WBC) Company A. Company A will open in September as Wilmington’s first ever fully professional company. Over 20 professional ballet dancers are contracted and will be moving to Wilmington next fall from all over the world,” according to a press release from the WBC.

“Sleeping Beauty” also features Manuella Navu and Oscar Sanchez, of The Washington Ballet, as Princess Aurora and Prince Desire.

Christopher Miro from Columbia Classical will play the role of blue bird. Rachel Matney, the principal professional for WBC, will be featured in the role of Lilac Fairy.

Anne DeVaux Trask is a featured student from Wilmington and is dancing the role of Princess Florine. DeVaux has attended summer at American Ballet Theater in New York and Kirov Academy in Washington D.C.

Serious classical trained youth dancers from the WBC will create corps de ballet for the professionals.

Young children will be featured in the fairy tale sections of the ballet, such as “Little Red Riding Hood and Puss-n-Boots, “creating a delightful accent to the professionals,” the release states.

Pre-show demonstrations will be performed by YWCA after-school students, Glow Academy students and the New Hanover High School Steel Drum band.

Tickets are available online through the Wilson Center, or 910-362-7999.
