WILMINGTON — A new stop along a Wave Tranist route is now operational.
The Cape Fear Transportation Authority and YWCA met to discuss removal of transportation barriers for the nonprofit that serves many economically disadvantaged community members.
“Transportation is a major hurdle between the community and access to our free and low-cost services, which increase economic opportunities, improve health and safety, and eliminate barriers from systems of oppression,” Velva Jenkins, CEO of YWCA Lower Cape Fear, said in a release.
YWCA offers affordable childcare, afterschool programing, financial classes for women and people of color, aquatics classes and more.
The stop at 2815 S. College Road is live now.
“By installing a new passenger stop at the YWCA location, we are creating direct access for existing and future participants, staff, and visitors to one of the cornerstones of our community,” Wave executive director Marie Parker said in a release. “We are looking forward to bridging the gap for our population, by bringing more people to the numerous beneficial programs, resources, and activities at the YWCA.”
The addition of the stop falls in a year where Wave has experienced other service changes and updates. Wave has implemented a continuous, uninterrupted hourly service for Route 107 College Road. It added a northeast route near Gordon Road and has increased frequencies from an hour to 30 minutes on three routes:
- Route 108 Market Street
- Route 201 Carolina Beach Road
- Route 205 Long Leaf Park
The transit authority could add more stops and pickups if the referendum for a 1/4-cent transportation sales tax is passed on the ballot during the 2022 election season. If passed, it will equal an extra penny for every $4 spent to help improve and expand the us system, as well as fund new multi-use paths and back a major project to relocate rail tracks out of Wilmington.
