WILMINGTON — A local man was sentenced to over four years in prison after being convicted as a felon in possession of a firearm.
On July 7, 30-year-old Rufus Lamar Bowser pleaded guilty to charges from the Wilmington Police Department. The WPD conducted a traffic stop on Jan. 19, 2022; the defendant was a passenger.
Officers indicated the smell of marijuana permeating the vehicle and asked the occupants to step out. As they went to frisk Bowser, he ran. Law enforcement caught him and a brief struggle ensued, revealing a loaded pistol in the defendant’s pocket.
Bowser was under supervision for 2008 convictions of second-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He also had outstanding warrants for his arrest for absconding from supervision and attempted first degree burglary.
The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN) — an evidence-based program to help reduce violent crime.
