SOUTHPORT, N.C. — A local community group that has devised a community survey about the impact Project Indigo could have on Southport is hosting a gathering Thursday. Locals are welcomed to learn the report that No High Density Southport — made up of concerned citizens — found conducted community-wide.

The 391-acre Project Indigo II would be an addition to Indigo Plantation Marina, potentially doubling the 3,800 population of Southport with an incoming 1,500 condos, duplexes, townhomes and cottages. The project would include 80,000 square feet of non-residential use, such as retail, healthcare office space and a restaurant.

No High Density Southport is holding its Voice of the Citizens event on Nov. 3, 6 p.m., at Trinity United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 209 E. Nash St.

Citizens of Southport and those living in its extra-territorial jurisdiction are encouraged to participate.

The purpose is to:

  • Share results of the community survey (designed by the No High Density Southport group) about the impact of Project Indigo, a high-density zoning project being proposed by the developer, East West-Partners in partnership with Bald Head Island Ltd.
  • Clarify and understand the process for resubmission of the developer’s application and related requirements with city officials, the city’s next steps, and timelines for evaluation.
  • Provide the opportunity for public comments and process-related questions for aldermen and planning board members who are in attendance.

No High Density Southport want to have a say in the outcome of Project Indigo, as to ensure it has the least amount of negative impact as possible on the area. The project was proposed by developers of Bald Head Island Ltd. and East West Partners, both of which were requesting Southport annex a large chunk of land (only 15% is currently in the city limits).

In early September the developers withdrew their application and noted it will be in talks with the city on the best path to move forward before resubmitting its plans.
