James William Sandy, 76

James William Sandy (Wilmington Funeral & Cremation)

WILMINGTON — James William Sandy, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 19, 2026, in Rocky Point, North Carolina. Born on July 30, 1949, in Wilmington, North Carolina, he lived a full and vibrant life until the age of 76.

James was a man who found his calling upon the waters and roads of his beloved state. He spent his career as a shrimp-boat operator, where he embraced the rhythms of the sea, followed by work as a tug-boat operator, guiding vessels safely through challenging waters. Later, he took to the open road as a truck driver, finding freedom and purpose in every mile he traveled.

Outside of his professional life, James harbored a deep love for fishing, often spending quiet mornings casting lines and finding peace by the water’s edge. His passion for horses was equally profound, highlighted by his ownership of A Conclusive Tardee “Runt,” a distinguished Palomino who rose to the status of World Champion. He was also a coon hunter with a Champion, Peggy Sue. These interests reflected James’s appreciation for nature and the simple joys of life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Lee and Honey Williams Sandy; his son, Dewayne Malpass; and his brothers, Skip Sandy and Jerry Sandy. James leaves behind his devoted wife, Patsy Babson Sandy, who stood by his side through life’s journey. He is also survived by his daughter, Jeanette Shipman; three cherished grandchildren, Jessica Lewis, Ryan Bracey, and Caroline Bracey; and seven treasured great-grandchildren, Leigh Lewis, Karson Lewis, Ensley Lewis, Avery Lewis, Audrey Moore, Tyler Moore, and Saylor Bracey. Additionally, cousin Kim Altman and several cousins mourn his passing.

Though no services will be held at this time, James’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Lower Cape Fear LifeCare Hospice, honoring the care and compassion he received.

James was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. His legacy of love, strength, and kindness will continue to inspire all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
