SOUTHPORT — With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of JoAnn Chestnut, who departed this life on April 23, 2026, at the age of 87. JoAnn was born on July 5, 1938, in Southport, North Carolina.
From her modest beginnings, she emerged as a resilient survivor. In her role as a proud homemaker, JoAnn’s artistic talents flourished. Known to many as “The Boss,” with even her license plate bearing this testament to her indomitable character. Her faith was deeply rooted, and her love of reading was a testament to her curious and contemplative nature; she found joy in the pages of the Bible, historical novels, and mysteries.
JoAnn was a woman of remarkable strength and conviction, qualities that shaped her formidable yet tender spirit. She was a gifted quilter, her vintage-styled creations earned accolades and captivated audiences at shows and in magazines. Such was the admiration for her work that renowned artist Bob Timberlake once offered to purchase a quilt of hers—a request she graciously declined, having crafted it with love for her grandson. Her embroidery was equally celebrated, and she possessed a hidden talent for writing poetry, capturing life’s essence through her words.
Preceded in death by her parents, Willie R. Suggs, Sr., and Mary Alma Suggs; siblings Opal Early, Francis Holt, and Ronald Suggs; her husband, Malcolm Chestnut; daughter, Lori Daddona, and her husband, Keith Daddona. JoAnn leaves behind a loving family who will forever hold her memory dear. She is survived by her devoted children, Geoffrey Chestnut and his wife Donna, along with Sheila Waters and the cherished memory of her late husband, Norman Richard Waters and her brother, Willie R. Suggs, Jr.. Her legacy lives on through her grandchildren, Paul, Andrew, and Tara Ann, as well as her great-grandchildren, Austin, Makayla, and Samantha, and multiple great-great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held in JoAnn’s honor on Friday, May 8th, at 11 am at Anchor Baptist Church at 300 Futch Creek Rd, Wilmington, NC 28411.
JoAnn Chestnut’s life was one of quiet determination and graceful resilience. She knew where she stood and lived with a sense of purpose that inspired all who knew her. Her passing leaves a mark on everyone fortunate enough to have been part of her journey. Although she has left this world, her spirit endures in the hearts of her family and friends, and in the beauty of her art founded in love.
