WILMINGTON — This weekend two area nonprofits are coming together to host a monthly cleanup near a popular creek in the area.
Cape Fear River Watch and and Keep New Hanover Beautiful welcome volunteers on May 9, 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., to tackle the local watershed of Smith Creek, located at the intersection of Princess Place Drive and Evans Street. Supplies and materials will be provided to remove hundreds of pounds of litter.

The monthly cleanups take place with last month’s event bringing in 180 volunteers — from both nonprofits, as well as Pender County Parks and Recreation, the Riverlights and Grand Bay communities, and UNCW’s Health Equity Bonner Fellowship — to do eight separate cleanups from Wilmington to Burgaw.
“Together, we removed a whopping 1,300 pounds of trash and recyclables from our creeks, wetlands, and tributaries before it could make its way to the Cape Fear River,” according to a release.
Registration is open here to volunteer for the Second Saturday Cleanup this week.
