WILMINGTON — Leslie Crews Danilowicz, 72, passed away Thursday, May 13, 2021.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 30 years, Edward Joseph Danilowicz.
She is survived by her son, Alex; sisters, Phyllis Vaughan and Marsha Kocab; brother, James Crews Jr.; and nieces and nephew, Maggie, Katie, Natalie, Jessika and Michael.
Leslie was born on Dec. 27, 1948, in Wilmington to the late Dr. James Marshall and Margaret Mackintosh Crews. She graduated from New Hanover High School and earned her B.A. Degree in Education at UNCG. She went on to teach language arts before earning her Master’s Degree in Library Science from UNCG and ECU. She worked as the librarian at Sunset Park Middle School, moving to Myrtle Grove Middle, where she worked until her retirement. She was dedicated to her love of learning and literature and to her students, many of whom found the library to be a refuge during the school day. She always had a book nearby and was a member of several local book clubs until her passing.
Leslie was an advocate for local ecology, organizing protests to preserve wild areas and serving on the zoning board to promote responsible land use. She enjoyed long walks through the woods with her dog, Sophie, and longer sits on the beach with friends and family. She was a gifted artist, rekindling her love for painting in retirement.
Leslie had an enduring interest in spirituality, a natural curiosity and a deep faith in God. She was an active member of St. Andrews Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving as a librarian, deacon and in their Stephen Ministry. She was dedicated to her family, especially her son. Leslie loved humor and had an infectious laugh. Her free and courageous spirit is an inspiration to those who knew and loved her.
