PENDER COUNY — Pender County Schools Superintendent Brad Breedlove has been awarded the 2027 A. Craig Phillips North Carolina Superintendent of the Year.

Breedlove has served as Pender County Schools superintendent since January 2023 and is the first superintendent from the county to receive the award.

The award is jointly presented by the North Carolina Association of School Administrators and the North Carolina School Superintendents’ Association, with support from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund. It recognizes leadership and service to the state’s public schools.

Breedlove was picked from a group of eight regional Superintendents of the Year after previously being named the Region 2 — Southeast Superintendent of the Year.

“We have done a lot in the last four years as a school system, and it’s hard work,” Breedlove said. “We are as good as the people that we have, and we have some fantastic people. I think receiving this award is a sign of that.”

Pender County Board of Education Vice Chair Jennifer Hansen said Breedlove winning the award is a reflection of Pender County Schools staff and the trust he puts in them.

“Dr. Breedlove is an incredibly humble man, very smart, very dedicated, and really just has the best interests of our staff and students and all of Pender County Schools,” Hansen said.

Prior to joining Pender County Schools, Breedlove worked with Union County Public Schools serving in several positions, including Chief Academic Officer, Director of School Performance, principal and teacher. He was named the 2014 North Carolina Principal of the Year.

In February Breedlove will have the opportunity to represent North Carolina and compete for the National Superintendent of the Year at the American Association of School Administrators’ National Conference on Education.
