BRUNSWICK COUNTY — A water quality advisory was posted today at the public kayak launch in Cottage Creek at the end of W. West Street in Southport for elevated bacteria levels exceeding state and federal recreational water quality standards.

Water samples taken on Oct. 6 and Oct. 7 indicated levels exceeding 104 enterococci per 100 milliliters for second tier non-daily use sites.  Enterococci is a bacteria group found in the intestines of warm-blooded animals.

While it won’t make someone sick, studies show enterococci may indicate the presence of other illness-causing organisms. People swimming or playing in waters with elevated bacteria levels have an increased risk of developing gastrointestinal illness or skin infections.

The advisory does not suggest a beach closing, nor does it affect the entire Southport area. Swimming advisories are for waters within 200 feet of the sign.

State officials will continue testing the site, and they will remove the sign and notify the public again when the bacteria levels decrease to levels below the standards.
