Gene Grace Sauer, 94, remembered for her compassionate guidance

WILMINGTON — Gene Grace Sauer, 94, born Dec. 28, 1926, died March 12, 2021.

The beautiful coastal orange and pink sun was setting when Gene Grace Sauer of Wilmington passed away to be with her heavenly Lord. Her magnificent wings outstretched, she rose to the heavens while surrounded by those she loved cheering her on. The trumpets blared announcing a very special angel was arriving. After an incredible 94-year-long journey, she is now resting in heaven.

Gene was born in Watertown, New York, to Col. Charles and Jane Grace. She had a very full life, which included living in Venezuela in South America, Texas, Georgia and various areas of North Carolina, including Asheville, and lastly, Wilmington. She adjusted to her new home in Wilmington quickly and became very active in her community.

She loved and was loved by her neighbors; her churches, where she sang in the choir and had various other duties, including her stamp club, where she was a lifetime member; and her card-playing group, where her favorite game was “hand and foot.” She was a busy mom, while also holding down several careers, including teaching Spanish at Owen High School; and later working at her favorite hotel, The Grove Park Inn in Asheville, where she was even recognized as Employee of the Year in 1990.

Gene is survived by her children, Tom Wynegar(Kathleen), Fred Wynegar (Cindy) and Susan Wright (Brad); four Sauer stepchildren and their extended families, who she thought of as her own, and they all love her dearly, Lucas (Holly), Ian (Cyndi), Marina and Aletta (Worth); and stepson, Robin (Tammy), who preceded her in death. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, including Katy Lellilid (Hans), Dr. Katie Kerschner (Kevin), Ben Rau (Sally), Joshua and Julie Sauer (Julian Benitez), Raylani Reis and Wyatt Wright; as well as many great grandchildren.

Gene will always be remembered as a very kind and giving person and we were all graced by her presence, her love, her guidance and her compassion, which guided so many of us to share in her comfort. She was looking forward to seeing many of her loved ones who went before her, where they were waiting inside the pearly gates of heaven.

Gene’s special churches were the Pearsall and Bethany Presbyterian Churches.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 20, at Bethany Presbyterian Church, 2237 Castle Hayne, Road, Wilmington, followed immediately by a reception at the Hampton Inn, University Area, 124 Old Eastwood Road, Wilmington. Services will be available via Zoom.
