WILMINGTON — A Wilmington woman faces a prison sentence of 10 years for defrauding the N.C. Social Security Administration.
Antoinette Andrea Colbert, 49, pleaded guilty Feb. 16 to theft of government property, according to a release from U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina Mike Easley. Since 2008, Colbert was accepting social security payments of her mother, who passed away in 2007.
The release states the family never reported her death to the administration. All of the mother’s social security mailings were rerouted to an address in Wilmington, North Carolina, where the defendant resided. Among them were multiple benefit replacement cards. As well, bank footage showed the defendant utilizing her deceased mother’s benefits.
Colbert pleased guilty to a violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 641; she will be sentenced in May of this year and could serve a maximum 10 years.
The Social Security Administration Office of Inspector General investigated the case.
