WILMINGTON — A weekend fire in downtown Wilmington has turned fatal. According to the Wilmington Fire Department, an 85-year-old male perished after receiving treatment from injuries.

The fire started just after 4 p.m. in the 200 block of South Front Street, with the townhome structure engulfed in flames and smoke upon firefighter arrival. Firefighters removed the 85-year-old, who was then transported to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The fire marshal has ruled the fire accidental and were able to contain it to the area it started in, preventing spread to adjacent townhomes.

The Wilmington Fire Department sends condolences to the victim’s family.
