SURF CITY — A three-story home in Surf City damaged by fire Saturday night will need to be stabilized before a portion of Highway 50 can reopen, according to authorities.
The structure in the 2300 block of South Shore Drive sustained extensive damage and is unsteady. The Surf City Fire Department reported a contractor will arrive Monday to help stabilize the home, which could lead to partial demolition, among other efforts.
This will allow for that portion of South Shore Drive, i.e. Highway 50, to reopen, as the roadway has been shuttered since the event.
“Until the roadway is reopened, the temporary detour remains in place,” according to a release from SCFD. “Motorists who must travel through the area are reminded to use caution and expect delays.”
Fire and emergency crews remained on site all weekend putting out hot spots near the structure, which caught fire around 11 p.m. on July 4th. Everyone affected made it out of the home safely.
One firefighter was transported to a medical center for evaluation during initial response but was released and returned to duty. There have not been other reported injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
