5K gallons of untreated sewage discharged in Shallotte

SHALLOTTE — On Monday evening, the Town of Shallotte reported 5,000 gallons of untreated wastewater at 4663 Mintz St.

According to a release the discharge lasted for roughly 12 hours before the lift station was repaired to prevent further damage.

“All visible loss of wastewater was recovered, and samples have been pulled from the Shallotte River and sent for testing,” the release details

North Carolina General Statute 143.215.1C requires public notice when untreated wastewater discharges 1,000 gallons or more and reaches surface water. The Department of Water Quality was notified and is reviewing the matter.
