WILMINGTON — A man connected to a 2023 stabbing incident at a home on North Sixth Street has taken a plea rather than go to trial.
On Monday, 38-year-old Terry Earl Hooper Jr. pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, according to the New Hanover County District Attorney’s Office.
Hooper was arrested, after turning himself into authorities, for the stabbing of 32-year-old Daniel Webb-Sholar. An argument escalated at the Sixth Street home on June 9, 2023, according to law enforcement.
Witnesses at the seen allegedly told detectives there had been “ongoing issues” between the men for a while, but it came to a head when Webb-Sholar spat on Hooper. Witnesses detailed that first Hooper brandished a firearm before putting it away, followed by Webb-Sholar attempting a fist-fight. They struggled briefly before Webb-Sholar, who they say was unarmed, was stabbed with a large knife.
Upon EMS and officers’ arrival in the 800 block of North Sixth Street, they found Webb-Sholar had incurred a deep, fatal wound to the chest. He passed away at the scene.
Hooper fled the scene in a van driven by his uncle, according to the DA’s office, but turned himself in later that night and was arrested with first-degree murder. The DA’s office said his trial was supposed to begin in two weeks.
