SOUTHEASTERN N.C. — The N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program has launched a campaign to mitigate speedy drivers in an attempt prevent deadly consequences.
Now through April 5, “Speed a Little. Lose a Lot” is in effect across North Carolina. Law enforcement officers throughout the state will increase patrols and checkpoints to identify and catch speeders.
“Speeding is not just a bad habit — it’s a dangerous choice that puts everyone on the road at risk,” the Highway Safety Program Director Mark Ezzell said in a release. “This campaign reminds drivers that even going a few miles over the speed limit can have devastating consequences.”
The N.C. Department of Transportation reports 335 deaths in speed-involved crashes last year. So far in 2026, roughly 41 people have already lost their lives due to speed crashes.
A vehicle going 55 miles per hour will require more than 200 feet to stop completely, according to the N.C. Driver Handbook. “Speed a Little. Lose a Lot” hopes to decrease dangerous roadway risks and increase awareness about the importance of driving the speed limit.
