WILMINGTON — Law enforcement has detained a suspect allegedly involved in a Tuesday-night shooting at an apartment complex in Wilmington.

32-year-old David Gotto, of Wilmington, has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill/inflict serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon, assault by pointing a gun, and possession of a firearm by a felon.

Just after 9:30 p.m., the Wilmington Police Department responded to 911 calls to the 4800 block of South College Road. Reports indicated there was gunfire, with a victim shot.

Upon arrival, officers identified and detained Gotto, who allegedly had been in a verbal altercation with another person in a parking lot before it escalated. According to WPD, the two people reached the front entrance of the apartment building, when the confrontation turned physical. Officers believe that’s when Gotto pulled a firearm from his waistband and struck the man with a gun.

A woman from a nearby apartment tried to intervene, but a single round was discharged and struck her. She was transported to Novant NHRMC with non-life-threatening injuries.

Gotto was in a neighboring apartment when law enforcement obtained search warrants for all residences involved. They located a firearm magazine and the gun allegedly used in the incident.

Gotto is currently being held without bond at the NHSO Detention Center.
