PENDER COUNTY — Area officials want to hear back from locals on how to shape the future of Pender County.

A draft plan for the county’s 5-Year Strategic Plan has been developed to help steer priorities in Pender County through 2030. Goals include:

  • Enhancing public safety
  • Supporting schools and education
  • Focusing on internal development and retention
  • Enhancing public communication and transparency
  • Improving access to services
  • Increasing economic development
  • Focusing on strategic growth and infrastructure planning

But before the plan moves forward, the county staff wants public input. A short survey is now open here for those who wish to participate to review the mission, core values and goals, and rank them importance. Longer explanations can also be entered on why certain goals are top priorities for surveyors or suggestions on alternative wording.

The survey will be open through April 28 and there are two engagement sessions being held: one at Tuesday, April 29, 7 p.m. in the Hampstead Library meeting room, and on Wednesday, April 30, 7 p.m., at the Board of Commissioners meeting room in Burgaw.

Commissioners will review the answers and finalize the goals and plan, with staff setting measurable objectives to guide implementation over the next five years. The final plan will be presented to commissioners to vote on in December.
