WILMINGTON — A free shred-a-thon is taking place for area residents to securely destroy documentation that contains personal information.

Multiple free countrywide events, hosted in partnership with New Hanover County Senior Center and Recycling and Solid Waste, will happen throughout June. People are encouraged to bring bank statements, medical records, credit card offers, and other documents containing personal or financial information.

The shred truck will be set up as a drive-thru at:

  • Kure Beach Town Hall, 117 Settlers Lane — Saturday, June 6, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Ogden Park, 615 Ogden Park Drive — Monday, June 8, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Carolina Beach’s Mike Chappell Park, 501 Dow Rd S. — Friday, June 12, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • MLK Center, 401 S. 8th Street — Saturday, June 13, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., as part of the City of Wilmington’s “Keys to Homeownership Expo”
  • Ogden Park, 516 Ogden Park Drive — Monday, June 15, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
  • Carolina Beach’s Mike Chappell Park, 501 Dow Rd S., Friday, June 19, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Funded by the N.C. Senior Medicare Patrol and the N.C. Department of Insurance’s SHIIP Division, residents are limited to a maximum of two boxes per vehicle.

“We are excited to be able to offer more opportunities for people to safely dispose of confidential and sensitive paperwork, preventing personal information from being used fraudulently,” Senior Resource Center Director Amber Smith said in a release.
